Going to Breezy Point makes a nice side trip. The family had a cabana there and would go there to cool off on hot summer days when they were in town. During the war years they stayed in town during the summer because they felt that going to the country would be unpatriotic. Instead they went to Breezy Point. It is located on the Rockaway Peninsula. To get there you take Flatbush Avenue past Floyd Bennet Field(where the Somers men flew their planes from) to the Marine Parkway Bridge.
Interesting side trips from here are the Brooklyn Marine Park, the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge (you can take the "A Train" there from Manhattan) and Coney Island.
